In December 2014, at the ANZGG Annual General Meeting, it was decided to establish a working group to consider the criteria and process for a certification program for professional geomorphologists in Australia and New Zealand. Following a review of existing certification schemes, the working party concluded that no existing program provides exactly the sort of accreditation required. The review also provided ideas on the criteria that could be adopted. The working party concluded that the CEnvP scheme offered the most suitable and beneficial certification program if a geomorphology category were to be developed.

The CEnvP Program aims to ensure that talented, skilled and ethical environmental professionals are given due recognition in line with their professional counterparts from engineering, accounting, planning and architecture. By certifying practitioners that meet high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, the Program assists in improving environmental practice and environmental outcomes. Specialist certification enables practitioners to be recognised for their knowledge, experience and leadership skills in specialised areas of environmental practice.

A working group was established from a variety of backgrounds including industry, academia and government. This group conducted extensive stakeholder consultation and has worked with the CEnvP to define a set of criteria and proficiencies for certification. The certification program was launched in mid 2020.
